Place, Work and Folk

Place, Work, Folk’ is a community oral history project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund capturing local people’s memories, recollections and stories of Bridgend Farmhouse when it was a working farm.

The farmhouse dates back to the very early 19th century and was a working farm up until the 1970’s, before eventually falling derelict, with the last farmers leaving in 2000.

For older people in the local community, it is a lasting reminder of childhood and a past rural way of life in an area that is now part of the city of Edinburgh.

‘Place, Work, Folk’ captured people’s memories before they were forgotten and lost, enabling local people to look at the past to inform the future.

This 18th month project was led by Carol Stobie who – alongside a team of dedicated volunteers and local historians – documented and gathered a wealth of material.
